A cast of former premier league players leads the search of Zimbabwean talent in the diaspora at the Flexi Cup tournament to be held in Coventry England this Saturday.

Joe Mugabe, Memory Mucherahohwa, Brian Badza, Muzondiwa Mugadza, Maxwell ‘MaRhino’ Dube, Timothy Chirozvani, Liberty Masunda and Obey Murefu are some of the players that are expected to play for Zimbabwe Legends against Walsall Legends in a match that will be an exhibition at the Flexi Cup tournament.

Flexi Cup tournament spokesperson Robert Hombiro said the tournament which is in its third running is there to expose the Zimbabwean talent in the diaspora with the hope that national team coaches will tap into that.

“Saturday is a big day for the Zimbabwean community here in the U.K. as the Flexi Cup has become a permanent feature on our calendar which we look forward to every year. Despite it starting as a get-together event it has now grown into a tournament that we can identify talent for our national team, in the same manner, other African countries are benefiting from their diasporans,” said Hombiro.

“We have the likes of Maxwell Dube and Liberty Masunda who have been regulars at our tournament and this year we are negotiating with the likes Mucherahohwa, Mugabe, Badza and other former players so that they are part of the Zimbabwe Legends team. We believe their presence will help to motivate the youngsters that will take part in this tournament. We hope that as we grow, this tournament will give a platform to most of these youngsters to be seen.”

The tournament which is a brainchild of Coventry based businessman Felix Marufu, and is being run by a committee that includes Thomas Thomik, Wilton Chisvo, Peter Ndlovu’s younger brother Brian, Gerald Mwase and Birmingham based English Football Association referee and instructor Justin Gapara.
