Zimbabwean referee Norman Matemera was again at the centre of a storm following a questionable decision this time in a World Cup qualifier between Ghana and Comoros.
With the score line at 0-0 the Comoros thought they had scored in the 81st minute and stun their more illustrious opponents only for Matemera to disallow the goal for offside.
Comoros felt robbed of what would have been a massive upset.
Matemera is no stranger to controversy and has had a number of high profile controversial decisions on the local football scene. In last year’s Chibuku Super Cup final Matemera angered Harare City when a key decision lead FC Platinum to equalise in added time. Harare City argued being denied a free kick just before the goal while there were questions over the goal itself .
In 2013 Matemera was accused by Highlanders of bias when he added more time to the displayed added time allowing Dynamos to equalise with Bosso leading 1-0,the match eventually ended 1-1.
Matemera and his assistants were again in the spotlight this year when Highlanders were denied what was genuine goal .Matemera initially gave the goal but his assistant raised his flag for offside and the goal was thus overturned. Dynamos went onto to win the match 3-2.
