New Warriors captain, Knowledge Musona, has said the Warriors will give their best shot when they face Liberia in their opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Sunday.

The Liberia clash will be the third in seven years between the two sides with the Warriors being confident of snatching a victory against the Lone Stars.

Speaking to journalists at a training session in Harare this morning, the 26-year-old K.V. Oostende striker said that although the 2017 Liberian side is little known to them, the Warriors would do their best to grab a win at home.

“I don’t know so much about the players because they are playing in different countries. I saw the team, some are playing in India, and very far. You never know, it’s a team that also has foreign based players . . . it’s not going to be an easy game but we are going to be employing our tactics, play to the coach’s instructions and give our best.

“So yeah, after the 90 minutes we are going to see the results but we are going to give our best performance,” Musona said.

He also said the Warriors were training very well in preparation of the weekend clash and that the team are targeting the all-important three points in their first qualifier.

“I must say I’m very happy, we have been preparing very well, since Monday – and other guys came earlier – so far so good,” he said.

“It’s very obvious we are targeting the three points because it’s the first game and it’s very crucial. We are playing at our home ground so we really need to make everything that we can [of it] and play to the best of our abilities and to win the three points, I think that’s the most important thing.

“So we are going to work hard in the next few days and prepare very well the tactics and all, so everything will be fine. I think by Sunday we’ll be able to deliver and give the nation good results.”

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Augsburg forward has been announced as captain of a new look Warriors squad by interim head coach, Norman Mapeza, after Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Willard Katsande, was controversially dropped from the national team line up.

Reports claimed the former captain was banned for insubordination together with four other players by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) after turning down an AFCON 2017 send-off dinner which was attended by Vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, demanding their wages.

Mapeza, however, has denied the claims, insisting that the squad selection was his sole prerogative as the head coach.

“I think it’s a great honour to represent the country and I thank the coach for choosing me. I know everyone here deserves to be a captain and we are all leaders . . . he chose me for his own reasons and I accept the responsibility and obviously with the help of my teammates, we’ll work together and share ideas, so yeah, we’ll see what happens in the future,” he added.

Zimbabwe boast of a slight upper hand against Liberia on the head to head after having drawn 1-1 and won 3-0 in their last two encounters.

“You know in football, if you look in the past, things have changed very much. So we don’t want to look into that, we just want to play our game. It’s a new challenge, because that team before was another team and we have a new team also. So we just have to work with what we have, forget the past, focus on the present and try to win.

“The stats are nothing because any team can win so you just have to forget and play to our best and try to win the game,” he said.
