As incredible as it may seem, Lionel Messi wasn’t there when La Albiceleste needed him the most.
The Argentine ace kicked off the penalty shootout for Argentina, just moments after Arturo Vidal had his penalty denied by Sergio Romero. With all eyes on him, Messi tried to put the ball away from his Barcelona team-mate Claudio Bravo, but his effort went way over the bar and ended up landing in MetLife Stadium’s stands.
Messi was the only player able to beat Claudio Bravo during last year’s Copa América title definition, but this time, fate wanted things to go differently.

Since 2005, the year he became a full-time member of Argentina’s senior squad, Messi has played four major tournament finals, losing all of them. He lost the 2007, 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals-twice against Chile and one against Brazil- , while adding the 2014 World Cup final loss against Germany.
