Zifa Communications Manager Xolisani Gwesela has played down reports suggesting Charles Mhlauri is the current favourite to replace Sunday Chidzambwa as the Warriors coach.
Chidzambwa quit the post last week, four days before the national team’s CHAN qualifier against Mauritius.
Several names have been thrown into the hat but, according to ZBC, it’s Mhlauri who is being tipped to take over.
However, Gwesela insists the appointment of the Warriors coach will only be done through the right procedure.
“There are processes that have to be followed,” he said.
“There was a meeting at the weekend and it was agreed that the technical committee will meet on 3 August to review performances and come up with a way forward following Chidzambwa’s resignation which the association accepted.”
Mhlauri has taken charge of Zimbabwe before and is the second coach to guide the team to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006 after Chidzambwa in 2004.
He was fired in 2008 before moving to the USA.
Meanwhile, other reports are saying the association is considering appointing a foreign coach and according to The Herald, Belgian Jean-Francois Losciuto has emerged as a leading candidate
