Warriors goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda’s team Witbank Spurs was on Saturday relegated to ABC Motsepe League which is a third division on the South African football league system.
Spurs lost 3-0 to Ubuntu Cape Town and fell eight points behind the team occupying the least safe spot with only two games left to the end of the season.
Sibanda, who at one point became the goalkeeper’s coach after the club dissolved the technical team, was not part of the squad that lost yesterday.
Despite trying hard between the goals for the greater part of the season, the 32-year old’s performances were overshadowed by the team’s poor display. The Zimbabwean goalie’s future at Spurs, along with other senior players, is now under the spotlight amid reports they haven’t received their salaries for months.
Meanwhile, should he be included in the Warriors squad for Afcon, it will again be a subject of debate considering his team’s relegation. During the qualifiers, fans constantly questioned coach Sunday Chidzambwa’s preference for him over other goalkeepers like Elvis Chipezeze who plays in the ABSA Premiership.
But Sibanda showed his capacity when he featured against DRC in the 1-1 draw at National Sports Stadium last year.
