East African guest nation Uganda stunned holders and hosts Zambia with a 2-0 victory in their Group A encounter on Wednesday.
Muhammad Shaban was the hero of the day when he scored a brace in the second half.
The striker scored his first goal in the 52nd minute before he added another one four minutes later. Uganda scored another goal in the 80th minute but it was disallowed for offside .
They now top Group A while Malawi who beat Swaziland 3-2 are second.
Peter Banda gave the Young Flames an early lead before Swaziland equalised through Nuno Tsabedze in the early minutes of second half. Patrick Phiri restored Malawi’s lead moments later but Order Mamba converted a penalty to level matters again.
Phiri completed his brace late in the game when he headed home to seal the victory for Malawi on the opening day.
In another game played today, North African guests Egypt got their tournament off to a winning start in a hard-fought 1-0 success over Mozambique.
Hussein Abdelkader grabbed the only goal of the game four minutes from time for what turned out to be a deserved victory for the Young Pharaohs.
