Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Issa Hayatou, and the Secretary General, Hicham Amrani, have been dragged to the Economic Court on charges of violation of competition laws as far as broadcast rights of continental tournaments is concerned.

Issa Hayatou gave Lagardère Sports Inc. the right to broadcast for a period of 12 years from 2017 until 2028, and had granted these rights to the same company from 2008 until 2016, giving this right for two adjoining rooms for 20 years.

The contract includes terrestrial and satellite broadcast television and broadcast over the Internet on the scope of the whole world.

The hearing of the case has been postponed to the third of April, so that an opportunity be provided for the media, Hayatou and urban issue and for those who defend them to mobilize.

On Monday, the CAF issued a statement saying that the charges and allegations reported in the media by the Egyptian Competition Authority are unsubstantiated, affirming that the African football body will vigorously defend its position, its rights and reputation using all legal means available under international law.

The CAF was founded in 1957 in Khartoum by the Egyptian, Ethiopian and Sudanese football associations.

Egypt maintains that since Cairo is home to the CAF headquarters, the decisions of its officials are subject to the country’s laws.
